A Word from the Pastor Two common questions a priest hears are: "When is a teaching of the Church infallible?" and "If a teaching is not infallibly proclaimed, do I have to believe it?" Before we proceed further we must clarify that the issue of infallibility pertains to Faith and Morals. What we mean by this is that when the Church exercises infallibility in teaching on Faith and Morals, the Holy Spirit protects the Church from teaching error. This protection of the Holy Spirit also extends to the deposit of Divine Revelation, that is the Bible. Most people when they hear the word "infallibility" think of papal infallibility. And they often take it to mean that anything the Popes says has to be believed by Catholics as true. That is just silly. If the pope were to look out on a rainy day and proclaim that the sun was shinning, one could properly respond, "Holy Father, you are mistaken." Papal infallibility has only been exercised twice, and as noted above, must pertain to issues of Faith or Morals. Certain other conditions must be in place for the exercise of papal infallibility. The Pope has to speak ex Cathedra, that is in his teaching role and note that he is doing so in making a solemn proclamation, which binds all the faithful. The only two times this was done were in 1854 when Pope Pius IX proclaimed the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception as an article of faith, and in 1950 when Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Assumption as an article of Faith. Both of these teachings had been held since the earliest days of the Church even though they had not previously been solemnly defined. The Magisterium or Teaching Authority of the Church exercises infallibility when it solemnly defines an article of Faith, for example during an ecumenical council. The council must be in union with the pope and cannot in any way override the pope. Unity comes from the top down: the pope does not have to be in union with the bishops but the bishops have to be in union with the pope. If there is any disagreement between some bishops and the pope on issues of Faith and Morals, it is the bishops who are wrong not the pope. Ecumenical Councils are only valid when in union with the pope. Even when the pope is not speaking ex Cathedra on Faith and Morals, he is still owed "religious submission of mind and will." This is clearly stated in Lumen Gentium, the Constitution of the Church. The single exception that I know of is Pope Benedict XVI's book Jesus of Nazareth in which the pope specifically states, "that this book is in no way an exercise of the Magisterium, is solely an expression of my personal search ... everyone is free, then, to contradict me." This does not mean we can contradict the established truths with which he deals in this book but only with his own original interpretations. Even so, we should remember that aside from being pope, Benedict XVI is also one of the most formidable intellects and theologians of our time and so merits especial attention. (Next week I will discuss how this applies to Humanae Vita). Pope Pius XII declared as a dogma revealed by God that Mary, the Immaculate Perpetual Virgin, mother of God, after the completion of her earthly life was assumed into heaven. Mary's assumption into heaven has been formally celebrated in all Christian countries from the beginning of the Middle Ages up to the Reformation and is consistent with the faith of the Church from the beginning. In one of his sermons, St. John Damascene (who died in 749) expressed the general belief of all Christianity: "Your sacred and happy soul, as nature will have it, was separated in death from your most blessed and immaculate body; and although the body was duly interred, it did not remain in the state of death, neither was it dissolved by decay ... Your most pure and sinless body was not left on earth but you were transferred to your heavenly throne, O Lady, Queen, and Mother of God in truth" (page 287 Weiser). The belief has become interwoven with legend, the most famous of which comes from an interpolated passage (that is, added by an unknown author) in the sermons of St. John Damascene. It tells of a request to the bishop of Jerusalem at the Council of Chalcedon (451) by the East Roman Emperor Marcian (who died in 457) to have the relics of Mary brought to Constantinople. The bishop is said to have answered, "Mary died in the presence of the apostles; but her tomb, when opened later on the request of St. Thomas, was found empty, and thus the apostles concluded that the body was taken up to heaven." Since the Church understands death to be a consequence of the first sin and believes that Mary was conceived without original sin, some theologians have wondered if Mary died or simply was assumed into heaven without dying. The Catechism of the Catholic Church doesn't answer the question, but says, "The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven ..." (#974; see also #966). The Gossamer Legend This delicate, filmy cobweb, prevalent in the air and on the grass and bushes, especially in autumn, is explained in a fine legend. It is the delicate thread unraveling from the Blessed Virgin's winding-sheet, falling to earth in her assumption. The word itself, however, comes from "goose summer" which was a name for St. Martin's summer because of the goose legend, which is another story gossamer: 1. A film of cobwebs floating in air in calm clear weather. 2. Something light, delicate, or insubstantial. winding-sheet: A sheet for wrapping a corpse; a shroud. Prayer to the Virgin Mary O Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mother of us all, we turn to you today as the one who said "Yes" to Life. Despite the surprise and the uncertainty about how this could be, you said yes. Mary, we pray today for all mothers who are afraid to be mothers. We pray for those who feel threatened and overwhelmed by their pregnancy. Intercede for them, that God may give them the grace to say yes, and the courage to go on. May they have the grace to reject the false solution of abortion. May they say with you, "Be it done unto me according to your word." May they experience the help of Christian people, and know the peace that comes from doing God's will. Amen.
