A Word from the Pastor
The end of summer is often a bittersweet time as we
savour the last warm days of summer and get ready for the
brisk activity of autumn. This is also the time when we bid
farewell to our senior altar boys who having completed high
school are now moving on to university. Our two senior
altar boys this year are Phil Cerroni and Carter Stevens,
both of them outstanding young men whose involvement in
the parish goes way beyond serving at the altar.
Phil was one of the first parishioners I met at St.
Catherine’s. An amateur filmmaker, Phil used the weeds of
St. Catherine’s grounds for the basis of his first opus. He is
enthusiastically involved in both CYO and the Knights of
Columbus activities. He worked at the parish office,
answering phones and as a grounds-man cleaning the
gardens. He regularly serves at the Sunday 7:30 a.m.
Mass and also at the Latin Mass, and can be relied upon to
help out even if not on the schedule.
Carter also has worked at the office answering phones
and taking messages. But more than that he is a gifted
musician. Under the tutelage of Dr. Hess he has played
the organ both for holy hours and even Masses at which he
was not serving at the altar. Many is the evening that I
have come to lock up the Church and found him alone in
the dark Church practicing the organ to improve his already
accomplished technique.
Like Phil, he would also
volunteer to serve at Masses for which he was not
scheduled as the need arose.
Carter is going to Brevard College and Phil to the
University of Dallas. Please keep them in your prayers as
they embark on this new phase of life. They go with my
profound thanks and best wishes. My gratitude also
extends to their parents for raising such fine Catholic
gentlemen.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Can You Watch One Hour With Me?
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
adoration and in contemplation, that is full of faith, and
ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of
the world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

The Pro-Life Committee

Saturday of the month, from 7:00 – 8:30 a.m. We will pray
the Rosary outside the
Falls Church Abortion Clinic located at
900 S. Washington Street.
Siena Academy Students Return
Siena Academy students return on
Wednesday, September 3
rd
.
A warm welcome to all our students, families
and our teachers! We hope all of you had a
great summer and we now look forward to a
new school year.
Please Do Not Park on the Grass
We have spent a great deal of money
repairing the asphalt at the Church as
well as planting new grass in front of the
Church. Parking on the grass not only
damages the grass but the edges of the
asphalt as well. More to the point: it is a
violation of the posted Fire Lanes.
There are plenty of parking spaces for all, but yes, if you
are late you will have to walk a few more feet. Arrive five
minutes early and there will be no extra walking. If you see
someone parking on the grass, please ask them to move -
this is your Church. We do not want to have to resort to
towing the offenders. Thank you for your cooperation.
Cycle A: The Year of the Gospel of Matthew
In two significant parables Matthew adapts Jesus’
proclamation of the justice of the kingdom to the needs of
his community. Both use legal language and both have the
atmosphere of a trial or hearing before a lord or judge.
They both come in sections of the Gospel that deal with
instruction to the disciples about life in community. In these
parables – the Unmerciful Servant (Mt 18:23-35) and the
Laborers in the Vineyard (Mt 20:1-16) – Matthew’s Jesus
teaches his disciples that pursuit of the justice of the
kingdom flows from the experience of unmerited
forgiveness from God. They are to manifest it to others
with the realization that God’s justice is always joined with
mercy and with surprising loving kindness. In the words of
Abraham J. Heschel, “God is compassion, not compromise;
justice, though not inclemency”
- (The Prophets, 16).
- Rev. John R. Donahue, S.J.

Vocations Awareness
Some white-collar jobs are more challenging than others
Vocation Prayer:
Heavenly Father, bless our diocese with the grace of
vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, grant to
those You have called the willingness and generosity of
spirit to give of themselves in devoting their lives and their
talents to the service of our Lord and to His Church.
Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and particularly
the faith of those You have called and will continue to call.
We ask this through Christ, Your Son. Amen.
“Who has known the mind of the Lord?” Through prayer
our minds become better aligned with the mind of Christ
and His will for us. If the Holy Spirit is prompting you to

Art & Catechesis Course
Our Lady of Hope Parish, Potomac Falls
From September through the end of December
Tuesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Art historian Nora Hamerman will teach a one-semester
course on the history of the Catholic Church through the
eyes of the artist. Catholic Christians had to meet the
challenges first of the Greek and Roman pagan world, later
Islam, then the Protestant dissenters and finally The
Enlightenment that denied the validity of all religious belief.
At every time artistic beauty proved to be a powerful
means of teaching the faith. Some topics are: the earliest
Christian art; icons and iconoclasm; the beauty of the
Cross; Christian humanism and the Renaissance; the Holy
Family; the Jesuits and worldwide evangelization.
Involving slides and music and possible field trips, the
course will enrich your faith and provide tools for
catechists. There are tuition breaks for senior auditors and
catechists.
To enroll, visit:
