Parish Stewardship
Thank you for your generous offerings of July 19/20. The
regular collection brought in $16,499 and the Poor Box
yielded $259.
Don’t Forget Us
We hope those traveling this summer enjoy their vacation
time. Please remember during the summer to support your
parish. During the summer when parishioners go on
vacation the collection drops. But our expenses do not
drop, but instead go up.
A Word from the Pastor
The 25
th
of July marked the fortieth anniversary of the
Papal Encyclical Humae Vitae, On Human Life. In this
encyclical Pope Paul VI reiterated Church teaching
concerning contraception – a teaching that goes back to
the earliest days of the Church and is rooted both in Sacred
Scripture (contrary to common belief) and in Natural Law.
It is inaccurate to speak of a “Church ban on
contraception,” as this is not a teaching which the Church
developed, but is rather a teaching which the Church has
received and hands on down the ages. In handing down
this teaching the Church, or more specifically the
Magisterium or teaching authority of the Church, is guided
and safeguarded by the Holy Spirit. When teaching on
Faith and Morals, the Magisterium is infallible. Catholics
who believe that they are not bound by this teaching are in
profound error and Catholics who knowingly disregard this
teaching and practice contraception or teach others to do
so are in a state of mortal sin. It is that serious.
The sexual or conjugal act is a great gift from God and a
great Good, in fact it is Sacred and thus needs to be in the
proper context, which is within matrimony, and open to the
transmission of Life. Anything less than this context – even
between a couple publicly engaged – is an abuse of this
great gift; and I would argue, a sacrilege. Philosophically
speaking the End or Good of the conjugal act is the
possible child. Contraception sees the Good as an evil and
seeks to prevent it, thus turning all creation topsy-turvy.
When contraception fails then abortion becomes an
alternative and we move from preventing a Life to the direct
taking of a Life.
Once that dark Rubicon has been
crossed, it is not a big jump to euthanasia. This has all
come to pass since 1968. The Netherlands, for example, is
among the most so-called progressive counties of the
West, and very early on popularized contraception and
legal abortion, and was the first country to legalize
euthanasia. It is not a coincidence that one of the most
famous attractions of Amsterdam is its “red light” district, or
that the Netherlands has long been a clearinghouse for
pornography and most insidiously for child pornography. In
the United States, we are, alas, not far behind. All because
we as a society have turned our backs on the Natural Law.
Children are a token both of Life and of the Future; they
are God’s greatest gifts to us. To prevent or limit the birth
of children is ultimately to seek oblivion.
Next week I will address the Scriptural Roots of the
Church’s teaching on contraception. Pope Paul VI, of
blessed Memory, pray for us!

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Can You Watch One Hour With Me?
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
adoration and in contemplation, that is full of faith, and
ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of
the world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 9:00 a.m.
Mass on Wednesday and ends with reposition of the
Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration also begins after the 9:00
a.m. Mass on every First Friday of the month and ends with
reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 8:55 a.m. on
Saturday.
Holy Hour is every Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Prayer to the Virgin Mary
O Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mother of us all, we turn to
you today as the one who said “Yes” to Life. Despite the
surprise and the uncertainty about how this could be, you
said yes. Mary, we pray today for all mothers who are
afraid to be mothers. We pray for those who feel
threatened and overwhelmed by their pregnancy.
Intercede for them, that God may give them the grace to
say yes, and the courage to go on. May they have the
grace to reject the false solution of abortion. May they say
with you, “Be it done unto me according to your word.”
May they experience the help of Christian people, and
know the peace that comes from doing God’s will. Amen.
