A Word from the Pastor
The election of the elderly Cardinal Angelo Roncalli,
Patriarch of Venice to the Chair of Peter in 1958 was seen
by many as a stop-gap measure, that he would be little
more than a papa di passagio who would do little or
nothing. However, in the short time that Pope John XXIII
steered the bark of Peter he generated some mighty
waves, the effects of which we are experiencing even now,
50 years after his election to the papacy.
Before becoming Pope John XXIII, Angelo Roncalli had
served not only as Patriarch of Venice, but had spent 28
years in the Vatican Diplomatic Corps. Pope Pius XI
appointed Roncalli Apostolic Delegate to Bulgaria in 1925.
He would spend the next 19 years in the Balkans where he
sought to overcome the deep-rooted distrust of the
Orthodox Churches. He spent the war-years in Turkey at
Istanbul where he sought to be of help to refugees, and
indeed assisted many Jews fleeing nazi persecution. With
considerable tack he encouraged King Boris of Bulgaria to
protect Jews in his kingdom and even enlisted the German
Ambassador to Turkey, Franz von Pappen in his efforts!
(After the war he wrote to the Nuremberg War Crimes
Tribunal. stating that von Pappen had helped him to save
24,000 Jewish lives. That probably saved the German
diplomat from the hangman’s noose). When praised for his
wartime efforts on behalf of the Jews, Roncalli said that he
was only doing what Pope Pius XII had instructed him to
do.
After the war Roncalli served as the Vatican’s
ambassador to France. General de Gaulle demanded that
the Vatican deprive 33 French bishops of their sees for
having supported the Vichy regime during the war, but was
convinced by the future pope to reduce that number to a
mere three. Roncalli was recalled from France in order to
become Patriarch of Venice where he busied himself with
pastoral work.
Roncalli’s choice of the name John was controversial.
There had been 22 popes named John, and one “anti-
pope” who called himself John XIII back in the 14
th
century.
The anti-pope was thought to have made further use of the
name John untenable, but the legitimate Pope John XIII
rescued the name and consigned the impostor to the
dustbins of history. His reasons for choosing the name
were that it was his father’s baptismal name as well as the
name of the parish church where he, himself had been
baptized; and in a rare outburst of papal ownership, he also
cited John as the name “of our own Cathedral,” St. John
Lateran. (The Basilica of St. Peter’s is not the Cathedral of
Rome as many think, but rather the Basilica of St. John
Lateran).
Pope John XXIII made his mark for all-time by convening
the Second Vatican Council. The announcement of a new
council came as a complete surprise, but in fact John was
building on earlier reforms instituted by Pope Pius XII.
John XXIII did not live to see the conclusion of the
Council. Contrary to popular mythology, he would have
been saddened by the direction it took and much of its
outcome. Nevertheless, the good that came out of the
Council is largely due to this pope who was thought to be
just “passing by.”

THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Can You Watch One Hour With Me?
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.

Heavenly Father, bless our diocese with the grace of
vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.

Increase the faith of all within our diocese, and
particularly the faith of those You have called and will
continue to call. We ask this through Christ, Your Son.
Amen.

The Universal Prayer
(attributed to Pope Clement XI)
Lord, I believe in you: increase my faith.
I trust in you: strengthen my trust.
I love you: let me love you more and more.
I am sorry for my sins: deepen my sorrow.
I worship you as my first beginning,
I long for you as my last end.
I praise you as my constant helper,
and call on you as my loving protector.
Guide me by your wisdom,
correct me with your justice,
comfort me with your mercy,
protect me with your power.
I offer you, Lord, my thoughts: to be fixed on you;
my words: to have you for their theme;
my actions: to reflect my love for you;
my sufferings: to be endured for your greater glory.
I want to do what you ask of me: in the way you ask,
for as long as you ask, because you ask it.
Lord, enlighten my understanding, strengthen my will,
purify my heart, and make me holy.
Help me to repent of my past sins
and to resist temptation in the future.
Help me to rise above my human weakness
and to grow stronger as a Christian.
Let me love you, my Lord and my God,
and see myself as I really am:
a pilgrim in this world,
a Christian called to respect and love
all whose lives I touch,
those in authority over me or those under my authority,
my friends and my enemies.
Help me to conquer anger by gentleness,
greed by generosity, apathy by fervor.
Help me to forget myself and reach out toward others.
Make me prudent in planning, courageous in taking risks.
Make me patient in suffering, unassuming in prosperity.
Keep me, Lord, attentive in prayer,
temperate in food and drink, diligent in my work,
firm in my good intentions.
Let my conscience be clear, my conduct without fault,
my speech blameless, my life well ordered.
Put me on guard against my human weaknesses.
Let me cherish your love for me, keep your law,
and come at last to your salvation.
Teach me to realize that this world is passing,
that my true future is the happiness of heaven,
that life on earth is short, and the life to come eternal.
Help me to prepare for death
with a proper fear of judgment,
but a greater trust in your goodness.
Lead me safely through death to the endless joy of heaven.
Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
