A Word from the Pastor
Pope John Paul I
The first pope to be born in the 20
th
century was John
Paul I who first saw the light of day on October 17
th
1912
as Albino Luciani. Luciani was ordained a priest in 1935
and after ordination studied at the Gregorian University
pursuing a doctorate in Sacred Theology. In 1937 he was
appointed vice-rector of the seminary in the Italian diocese
of Belluno. He was eventually consecrated Bishop of
Vittorio Veneto and as such attended the Second Vatican
Council without being particularly active, making no direct
interventions. In 1963 he was made Patriarch of Venice.
There he manifested a particular devotion to the poor,
whom in imitation of St. Lawrence he described as the true
riches of the Church. He encouraged parish priests to sell
Church ornaments and jewels to the benefit of the poor.
He was very active ecumenically, hosting meetings with
Anglican and Orthodox theologians.
Luciani was elected pope on the very first day of balloting
in the conclave following the death of Pope Paul VI. His
choice of the name John Paul was innovative in that he
wished thereby to pay tribute to both of his immediate two
predecessors in the shoes of the fisherman and also as it
was the first time a pope had chosen a double name. He
declined a coronation opting instead for a fairly simple
investiture of the pallium. Neither of his two successors
revived the use of the Triple Tiara. His death a mere 33
days after his election gave raise to any number of bizarre
stories, none of which were true. Because of his short
papacy as well as his successor’s immense charisma Pope
John Paul I is little remembered, over-shadowed both by
his predecessors and his successors.

The Blessed Sacrament
THIS IS MY BODY – THIS IS MY BLOOD
Can You Watch One Hour With Me?
A Holy Hour is simply an hour set-aside totally for the Lord;
an hour consecrated to God. It is a time to recollect our
mind, heart and spirit in order to focus them on God and
more specifically our Eucharistic Lord. To make a Holy
Hour is to make a decision to spend one hour with our
friend, our Savior and Lord who is truly present in the
Blessed Sacrament of the altar.
Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Hour
The Church and the world have a great need of Eucharistic
worship. Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let
us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in
adoration and in contemplation, that is full of faith, and
ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of
the world. May our adoration never cease.
– John Paul II, 1960
To sign up for adoration or for information regarding
adoration please contact Diane Cieslak 703.678.3919.
Holy Hour is at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday.
24 hour Eucharistic Adoration is every Wednesday and
every First Friday, beginning after the 9:00 a.m. Mass and
ending the following morning just before the 9:00 a.m.
Mass.
